“I have sinned.” So states one of the most effective—and one of the most difficult—prayers recorded in the Bible. Pride hates to admit weakness, and arrogance dislikes acknowledging shortcomings. Just ask Adam and Eve. Rather than owning their sin, Adam blamed God and Eve blamed the serpent. But God knew the truth (Genesis 3:8–13). I have found that when God convicts us of sin, the easiest thing to say is “yes.” Silence, excuses, rationalization, and deflection don’t work. Forgiveness comes through confession. – Dr. Dave Earley

I believe that God wants and is able to give us our deepest, “pure motive” desires. If you’re burdened like Rhonda and Hannah, identify the deep, God-sized desire of your heart. Ask God for it persistently, earnestly, and honestly with fasting until you get a response. Of course, if the request is not for the best, God may not answer, or He may let you wait for a long stretch of time until your motives are purified. But if your desire is God given, and God purified, then watch out. You may be given your own “Samuel” to give back to the Lord so that He might bless others. – Dr. Dave Earley

And memorize John 14:13-14 – 13 Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.

“Although some Bible teachers and pastors frown upon asking God for a sign, I think that there are those rare occasions in everyone’s life when it is perfectly appropriate. Like Gideon, you sense God is calling you to something far greater, vastly higher, and much more difficult than you can imagine. You are making the biggest decision of your life. You are mostly convinced that you have heard His voice. But you have to be certain. The stakes are unbelievably high. You need confirmation.”
